The Piano Panel

The Piano Panel is one of the two views available in the Audio Window for displaying frequency spectra.  The Piano Panel displays a frequency spectrum as notes on a piano keyboard.  The color-scheme of the panel is configured using the Piano Panel Configuration Dialog.

The Piano Panel can be set to respond either directly to a frequency spectrum, or to respond to the MIDI data derived from the spectrum.

In the Frequency Display Mode, a note is "on" if the average signal for the range of frequencies corresponding to that note is greater than the Note Processor's threshold. The note's velocity is then calculated as:

where max = the Note Processor's maximum signal.

In the MIDI Display Mode, a note is "on" if the Midi Assembler has generated a note-on event for the note, and the note's velocity is the MIDI velocity of that note-on event.

The strength of the signal for any note is indicated in two ways.  A note which is "off" is simply displayed in the appropriate black or white key color.  For "on" notes, a new color will be calculated based on the note velocity, where a velocity of zero corresponds to the "white key" color, and a velocity of 127 corresponds to the "On Note" color.  The numeric value of the velocity is also printed above the note name, as shown below.
