The Wave Panel

The Wave Panel displays the sonogram of an opened Audio File.  The Wave Panel provides the following types of functionality:
  • Customization of the color-scheme, zoom behavior, and timing display.
  • Drag-selection integrated with the Frequency and Note Map displays.
  • Full zooming in both time and signal axes.
  • Reporting of properties of the sample beneath the cursor location.
  • Copying of the sonogram onto the clipboard.
  • Cursor-tracking of current audio sample during playback.

Customization of the display is done through the Wave Panel Configuration Dialog, available by selection Tools-Options from the main menu, or by pressing the Options Button in the main toolbar.

Navigating the Wave Panel

While zoomed, pressing the left or right arrow kills will shift the view by 50% of its width, by 100% of its width if the Control key is also pressed, or by 200% of its width if the Shift key is also pressed.

Double-clicking the Wave Panel will remove any selection and zoom out to the entire waveform.

Selecting Regions of the Sonogram

By pressing the left mouse button on the Wave Panel, dragging to a new location, and releasing the mouse button, the selected rectangular region will be hilighted as illustrated in the figure.  Even if only one channel of a stereo waveform was selected, regions of both channels will be hilighted.

If you are making a drag-selection and change your mind, pressing <Escape> will cancel the new selection.

Upon making a new selection, several events occur:

1. Samples in the selected region are sent to the power spectrum analyzer, which generates a frequency spectrum which is applied to the frequency panel.

This will not occur if "Auto Transform" has been unchecked in the Wave Panel's context menu.

2. MIDI events derived from the frequency spectrum are applied to the MIDI window and, if the MIDI window is configured for emitting events, MIDI events are sent to the selected MIDI port.
3. The equivalent region of the associated Note Map Panel is selected.
4. Buttons in the Wave Panel Toolbar related to the current selection are enabled.

Regions of the sonogram may also be selected by choosing Selection - Sample/Time Range from the context menu, or by pressing Time-Selection button from the toolbar, and entering the desired time- or sample-range.

If "Play Selection Only" is checked in the Audio menu, subsequent playback will span only the selected region of the waveform (see Audio Window Configuration).

The Wave Panel "Info Tip"

After selecting "Info Tip" from the Wave Panel's context menu, or by pressing the Info button on the toolbar, moving the mouse over the Wave Panel will cause a floating window to be updated with information about the location beneath the mouse pointer - the audio sample #, the time, and the signal amplitude.  If the pointer is over a selection, the selection duration (in samples and seconds) is also displayed.  The floating window will disappear by selecting "Info Tip" or selecting the Info button again.
