Configuring Note Map Generation

This dialog sets the default values for newly generated Note Maps.  When actually preparing to create new Note Maps, these settings are easily customized from the New Audio Objects dialog.

Colors

NoteMap colors are determined when the Note Map is generated, and while the graphic elements surrounding the Note Map in the Note Map window are customizable at any time, the colors of the Note Map itself cannot be changed except by regenerating the Note Map.

Hot Color Select a color corresponding to "hot" signals, or frequencies with very strong signals.
Cold Color Select a color corresponding to background signal.

Signal Scale

When Note Maps are generated, AudioExplorer first determines the maximum signal for all notes through the entire audio file. Then, at each time interval for each note, AudioExplorer calculates a color intermediate between the "cold" color and "hot" color, where the hot color corresponds to the maximum signal, and the cold color corresponds to any signal below the threshold, where the threshold is equal to the maximum signal/threshold factor.

While logarithmic scaling is probably most often preferred, there may be special types of music or sounds for which linear scaling exposes more detail.  AudioExplorer's signal histogram can be used to examine the distribution of frequency signal strengths in the audio file.

Linear Select to apply linear scaling to the signal strength color.
Logarithmic Select to apply logarithmic scaling to the signal strength color.
Threshold Factor Enter a number greater than one to be used to calculate the global threshold, where threshold = maximum signal/threshold factor.

Enter 0 to use a global threshold of 0.

Maximum Dimensions

The number of time divisions used to prepare a Note Map is equal to the duration of the audio file divided by the sampling interval used by the power-spectrum analyzer.

Width Enter the desired maximum width of newly generated Note Maps.
Height The NoteMap height is fixed at 256 pixels, and cannot be changed.
