AudioExplorer Objects and Associated Files

Each of AudioExplorer's objects is associated with a directory and/or a set of files.  The table below describes these associations and the types of files generated and maintained by AudioExplorer.

Many of AudioExplorer's files start with a number described below as <source-file hash>.  In all cases, "<source-file hash> is a hash-code derived from the filename of the original audio source (e.g., a .wav file).  This naming convention assures that AudioExplorer will assign unique names to all of its data files.

Object Type Corresponds to...

Main Project

Directory named "<name>.prj", where <name> is the main project's name.

The main project directory is a sub-directory of the system directory selected in AudioExplorer's System Project configuration dialog.

Project Directories named "<name>.prj", where <name> is the project name.

Project directories are sub-directories of the main project directory.

Audio File Files named <source-file hash>_<name>.pxdata.

"pxdata" is shorthand for "presentation data".  This file contains statistics derived from the source audio data that allow the WavePanel to rapidly display the waveform at any zoom factor.

Note Map Files named <source-file hash>_<name>.nsp and <source-file hash>_<name>nsp.bmp.

The .nsp file contains data that AudioExplorer uses to generate dynamic notemaps and to display MIDI and note-region overlays.

The .bmp file is the static bitmap associated with the notemap.

Envelopes associated with notemaps are stored in "Envelope.xml".

Spectral File Files named <source-file hash>_<name>.spec.

These files, which can be quite huge, contain complete frequency spectra calculated for every sampling interval defined in the Fourier/PSA configuration dialog.

Frequency Map Files named <source-file hash>_<name>.fmhd and <source-file hash>_<name>.bmp.

The .fmhd file contains header information which describes the source and properties of the frequency map.  The .bmp file is the actual bitmap image.
