The MIDI Note Window

The MIDI Note Window presents a graphic representation of the MIDI data, and provides tools for adjusting the MIDI timing so that notes are optimally aligned with beats and measures.

The Control Panel

Note/Time Indicators The smaller panel shows the current location of the mouse.  When the mouse is positioned over a note, the larger panel displays the note's pitch, start time (as M:B:T), and duration.

Time Shift When a value is typed or selected in this box, all MIDI notes will be shifted by the given number of ticks.

Time Scaling When a value is typed or selected in this box, the start times and durations of all note events will be scaled by this amount.

Actions Pressing this button brings up a menu of actions.

Notes These controls adjust the range of notes displayed in the note window.

Measures This control adjusts the number of measures displayed in the note window.

Timing Statistics

The Timing Statistics windows displays statistics describing the quality of fit of the selected notes to the current MIDI timing.

Typically, you will want to select notes which occur at regular intervals (e.g., an ostinato pattern) over an extended portion of the music.

Notes are added to the stats window by right-clicking the notes and selecting "Monitor", or by dragging them into the statistics window.  Notes are removed from the statistics window by right-clicking them and selecting "unmonitor", or by right-clicking them in the statistics window and selecting "remove".

Statistics are displayed for each note, and for all notes combined ("summary").

Note The note to which the statistics apply.  "Summary" refers to all chosen notes.
# The # of note-on events from which the statistics are calculated.
Whole Note Offset The mean distance (in MIDI ticks) of the note-on events from the measure boundaries.
Half Note Offset The mean distance (in MIDI ticks) of the note-on events from the 2nd beat and  (for 4/4 time signatures) measure boundaries.
Quarter Note Offset The mean distance (in MIDI ticks) of the note-on events from the beat boundaries.
