AudioExplorer Quick Start

A.

Opening and playing audio files.

Select "Open" from the File menu, or drag an audio file onto the main AudioExplorer window.  Select "OK" on the New Audio Objects dialog.

AudioExplorer will create a new (but grayed-out) Audio File object in the project tree, and then spend some time analyzing the audio data and generating information it needs to efficiently draw the audio waveform.  When it is finished, the new Audio File icon will become enabled.  Double-click the icon to open it.

B.

Playing audio

After opening an audio file, select "Play" from the Audio menu, or hit the space-bar, or click the Play button on the Timing tool window.  You are now playing through the current output audio device (see Configuring Playback).

C.

Recording audio

Select "New" from the File menu.  Select "Record" from the Audio menu, or, hit the space-bar, or, click the Record button on the Timing tool window.  You are now recording through the current input audio device (see Configuring Recording).

D.

Analyzing audio interactively

After opening or recording an audio file, drag-selecting a region of the audio waveform will invoke an analysis of the selected audio data, with frequency data appearing in either the Piano Panel or the Frequency Panel (whichever is currently selected for display).

E.

Generating a visual image (Note Map) of your music

After creating an Audio File object as in A above, right click on it's icon and select "New Note Map..." from the context menu.  Hit "OK" on the New Audio Objects dialog.

AudioExplorer will create a new (but grayed-out) Note Map object in the project tree, and then spend some time analyzing the audio data and generating the Note Map.  When it has finished, the icon will become enabled.  Double click the icon to open a Note Map Window, or drag the icon onto the Audio File's open audio window to view the Note Map there.

F.

Making a MIDI file from my audio

The simplest way to generate MIDI is to simply record or playback an audio file.  MIDI is automatically generated and placed in the MIDI Window, where it may be edited, optimized, and/or saved as either a standard MIDI file or as text.  If the MIDI is not satisfactory, you may need to spend some time experimenting with the real-time MIDI parameters.

To create MIDI in batch mode, first generate a Note Map from your audio file (section E above), open the Note Map, right-click on the Note Map, and select "Render MIDI".  Since AudioExplorer can examine the entire audio file in batch mode, the resulting MIDI is often more satisfying than the real-time MIDI.

General navigation guidelines

In interactive (non-playback, non-record) mode, clicking on the Wave Panel moves the audio cursor to the clicked position, and subsequent playback will begin at that place.

Double-clicking in any panel un-zooms the view.

All panels have a context menu accessible by right-clicking on the panel.

Drag Selections - all panels except for the Piano Panel implement drag selection.  In the Wave Panel, the selected region is highlighted and analyzed.  In the Frequency and Map Panels, the view automatically zooms into the selection.

The space bar starts/stops audio playback.
