Since music is typically rich with complex timbres, the task of distilling it down to the simple on/off events of MIDI is daunting.

Of our five senses, vision is the most adept at discerning patterns within complex shapes and (dis)organizations.  As a scientist, I found that visualization of information was an essential first step in any analysis.

In developing an audio-to-MIDI algorithm, my first instinct was therefore to develop tools for "visualizing" the music.

These tools, along with a first-draft audio-to-MIDI algorithm, comprise AudioExplorer.
